Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose cap, stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. However the stock was not drilled out for the storage compartments. The LOP measures 13.25”  from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The metal buttplate retains about 50% of its finish and shows heavy scratches around the edges. There is some minor rust freckling present. The trap door functions but not well in that it does not stay fully closed. This replacement stock shows minor handling wear, with one notable dent in the toe of the heel. There are some minor visible chips in the toe and one medium chip in the nose. There are no visible cracks. The metal nose cap and bands have mostly turned brown with patina. The stacking ring has surface rust present. The handguards show dents, compressions and scratches throughout with no visible chips or cracks. The forward handguard has two notable compressions. Overall the stock rates in about Very Good + condition while the handguards are in Good + condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original and refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is minor visible pitting mainly in the lands throughout the bore. According to our gauges the muzzle reads at almost a 2.5, the throat reads at about a 1.5-2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10. The CMP inspection tag for the original barrel when the rifle was sold by the CMP shows a Springfield barrel from 4/53 with a muzzle of 3+ and a throat of 6 I am guessing this is why the barrel was replaced.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The cylinder lock, plug and gas cylinder have lost their finish. The bottom metal has as well. The action and bolt show only minor finish loss and rub wear on the friction surfaces. The charging handle has lost its finish on all the edges. The receiver has been refinished and shows pitting under the refinish. The trigger guard locks but not all the way and can be bumped open. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in about Good + condition for C&R given its age.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a foam padded cardboard box, inspection tag, certificate of authenticity manual, thank you card, CMP yellow chamber flag, and En bloc clip.

Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match.

The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.

This example began its life in December of 1941, was re-barreled for the first time some time after 1953 and again after 1994 before being semi refinished, having the stock replaced, and being sold by the CMP in 2024 as a Rack Grade rifle.
