The wood shows compressions, scratches, lines, nicks, rub marks and finish loss scattered throughout. The upper rear handguard shows a crack forming. The forward handguard shows a chip missing from the edge. There is also a small crack forming just behind the receiver. The butt plate is loose and has lost its finish, shows dirt in the recesses, rub wear around the edges and worn checkering. The door functions but the spring is not strong. Overall the stock is in Fair+ condition.

Type of Finish: The rifle itself appears to have been blued.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is very minor visible pitting/erosion mainly in the last third of the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2.5+ and a throat of 4. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The leading edges of the muzzle, gas lock and plug show finish loss. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear and minor finish loss. The bottom metal shows some scratches through the finish. The op rod shows surface rust and some finish loss on the charging handle. The action is smooth. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Good condition.

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a green CMP case with foam.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured in May of 1944 during the height of World War II production and later rebuilt with a Springfield Armory barrel dated December 1951. Like many U.S. service rifles that remained in military inventory after the war, this example appears to have gone through a postwar arsenal refurbishment program where worn components were replaced and the rifle was rebarreled for continued service. The M1 Garand earned its legendary reputation as the standard U.S. service rifle of World War II, praised for its reliability, ruggedness, and semi-automatic firepower at a time when many opposing forces still relied on bolt-action rifles. Overall, this is a classic example of a rebuilt Garand that reflects the long operational life and continual maintenance history typical of U.S. military rifles during the postwar and Korean War era.
