Our Assessment: This Springfield M1 Garand, with a receiver manufactured in September 1943, is a mid-World War II production rifle, originally built at the height of the war when Springfield Armory was producing large numbers of M1s for the U.S. military. Designed by John Garand and adopted in 1936, the M1 Garand was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle for the U.S. Armed Forces, giving American troops a significant advantage over enemy forces still using bolt-action rifles. By late 1943, the M1 was being used extensively in Europe and the Pacific, proving to be a reliable and effective battle rifle. This example was later re-barreled in February 1955, indicating it likely went through a post-war refurbishment, possibly for continued military service during the Korean War or early Cold War period.

The rifle is currently fitted with a commercial replacement stock marked with a CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) cartouche, signifying that it was later sold through the CMP after another refurbishment. The CMP, which succeeded the DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship), was established to promote marksmanship training and preserve historic military rifles. Many M1 Garands were inspected, refinished, and sold to the public through CMP sales programs, ensuring their continued legacy among collectors and shooters. While there is no CMP paperwork confirming its original sale grade, based on its mix of military and replacement parts, as well as its refurbished condition, it was most likely sold as a Service Grade rifle, which typically consists of rifles with a mix of original and replaced parts but still meeting military specifications for function and reliability. This rifle represents the long service life of the M1 Garand, from its wartime origins through multiple military rebuilds and eventual civilian ownership, ensuring its preservation as part of American firearms history.
