The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. This CMP replacement stock and handguards show very little marks or wear. The stock shows a few small rub marks, as do the upper handguards. There are no cracks. There is a very small chip near the rear of the trigger assembly, and another on the right leading edge of the forward handguard. The buttplate similarly has almost no wear and is in excellent condition. Overall the furniture on this rifle is in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized and blued

Finish Originality: Original, and refinished.

Bore Condition: This rifle had the barrel replaced with a Criterion Barrel in 2010. The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp, there is no erosion in the bore. According to our gauges the muzzle reads at 0, and the throat reads at 0 as well. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: The bolt, op rod, clip latch, gas cylinder, cylinder lock, front sight, trigger group, and plug have their original finishes. The barrel does as well as it is basically new. The plug has lost its finish and shows surface rust in the slot, the front sight shows surface rust on the wings, the cylinder lock has surface rust on the sides, the gas cylinder and front stacking loop show surface rust as well. The trigger group has lost finish on the edges of the guard, where it has retained its finish the finish has turned green with patina. The bolt shows finish loss from rub wear on the friction surfaces. The receiver has been refinished and shows almost no wear. The spring housing has surface rust on the exterior. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle would be in Excellent condition if not for the surface rust on the parts with their original finish. With the surface rust present and the possible pitting under the rust this rifle is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a CMP hard case, en bloc clip, CMP thank you card, yellow chamber flag and manual.

Our Assessment: The M1 Garand, designed by Canadian-born John C. Garand and manufactured by Springfield Armory, holds an iconic place in American military history. Serving as the standard-issue rifle for the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War, it was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, this gas-operated, rotating bolt rifle gave American troops a distinct advantage in firefights, allowing for a rate of fire that bolt-action rifles simply couldn’t match. The M1 Garand’s design was revolutionary for its time, with an internal magazine fed by an eight-round “en bloc” clip. The rifle automatically ejected the clip with a distinctive “ping” sound when empty, signaling the need for a reload. This sound became iconic, a signature auditory clue of the weapon’s presence on the battlefield. While the fixed magazine and clip system did present some limitations, they were largely outweighed by the rifle’s advantages in speed and firepower. Today, the M1 Garand is a coveted piece for collectors, competitive shooters, and history enthusiasts alike. It is often seen in vintage military shooting competitions and has become a popular choice for hunters who appreciate its historical significance. With its blend of innovative design, rugged reliability, and proven effectiveness, the M1 Garand is more than just a relic of the past; it’s a symbol of American ingenuity and the bravery of those who carried it into battle.

This example began its life in April of 1945 shortly before the end of the war and then was re-barrelled, refinished and re-stocked by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. I believe this rifle was originally sold as an Expert Grade rifle however we do not have the original inspection tag.
