There are two cracks in the rear upper handguard in between the receiver and the rear band. The butt plate has been refinished and shows pitting and rub wear under the finish. The checkering is semi-dull and the door spring is strong. The butt plate sits proud over the wood due to the sanding. Overall the stock set is in about Good-Good+ condition.

The receiver shows heavy pitting with missing material under the refinish. The receiver legs show this pitting as well. The flat of the bolt shows some surface rust freckling forming. The trigger group shows some rub marks and minor wear. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Fair+-Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory U.S. M1 Garand features a receiver manufactured in July 1943, paired with a Springfield barrel dated July 1942. The M1 Garand, designed by John C. Garand, was the standard U.S. service rifle of World War II and is widely regarded as the first standard-issue semi-automatic infantry rifle adopted by a major military power. George S. Patton famously referred to it as “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” reflecting its significant impact on battlefield effectiveness. The earlier barrel date suggests a likely arsenal replacement or rebuild during service, a common occurrence as rifles were maintained and updated throughout the war.

The rifle appears to have been refinished and later sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), though no accompanying paperwork is present. This is consistent with many CMP-distributed rifles, which often underwent arsenal refurbishment prior to release. Overall, it represents a typical and serviceable example of a wartime M1 Garand with a mix of period-correct components, reflecting both its military use and post-war reissue history.
