Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment and cleaning rod. The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been sanded and refinished. The wood shows minor compressions, lines, and several scattered chips. There is a notable crack on the left side rear of the forward handguard. The butt plate has lost most of its finish and shows pitting and rub wear. The checkering is semi-dull and the door spring is strong. The butt plate sits proud over the wood due to the sanding. Overall the stock set is in about Good+-Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is very bright with sharp rifling. There is some barely visible erosion/pitting in the grooves. There is some minor fouling present. Our gauges show a muzzle of 0 and a throat of 2. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show visible rub wear. The gas cylinder and lock show the majority of the finish loss. The barrel bands show finish loss as well. The finish has turned green with age. The action is smooth. The edges of the trigger guard show some finish loss. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Includes a green canvas sling and the cleaning rod.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured in June 1942 and is fitted with a Winchester barrel, reflecting the common wartime practice of interchanging parts among prime contractors to maintain production. Designed by John C. Garand, the M1 Garand became the standard U.S. service rifle of World War II, valued for its semi-automatic firepower and reliability. George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” underscoring its lasting historical importance. The presence of a Winchester barrel on a Springfield receiver is entirely consistent with arsenal service and rebuild practices.
The barrel on this example is in excellent condition, with a very bright bore and sharp rifling. There is only faint, barely visible erosion or light pitting in the grooves along with minor fouling present. Gauging shows a muzzle reading of 0 and a throat erosion of 2, both strong indicators of limited wear and good shooting life remaining. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates approximately 9.25 out of 10, making this a particularly desirable shooter-grade Garand with excellent barrel condition.
