Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured in November 1943 and is fitted with a Springfield barrel dated 9-1943, giving the rifle a notably close receiver and barrel date relationship for a wartime example. The rifle has been refinished, and the receiver leg bears what appears to be the hand-scribed marking “SA 9-65.” This marking is consistent with the possibility of a September 1965 refurbishment at Springfield Armory, although the exact history represented by the inscription cannot be confirmed from the marking alone.
The original wartime barrel remains particularly noteworthy, with a bright bore and sharp rifling that contribute to an overall barrel rating of 9.25, with a muzzle reading of 2+ and throat of 2. Those measurements indicate a very well-preserved bore for a barrel dating to 1943, making the barrel one of the more desirable aspects of this rifle. Combined with its wartime Springfield receiver and matching-period Springfield barrel, this Garand presents a strong example of a World War II rifle that subsequently underwent refurbishment while retaining an unusually good original barrel.
