Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked with “Left” twice and two arrows. The elevation knob is marked 2-12 in increments of 2 and “NHC”. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage containing a cleaning kit. The LOP measures 13”. The stock set had been sanded and refinished. The wood shows some very light surface level lines and very minor compressions. There are no chips or cracks. The butt plate has been refinished and shows rub wear around the edges under the refinish. The door spring is strong.  Overall the stock is in Very Good+-Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion or pitting in the bore. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1 and the throat of 1. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.   

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The finish shows minor scattered marks and lines. The finish on the trigger group and receiver have turned slightly green with age. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear. The action is mostly smooth. This rifle was partially bedded to the stock at one point. It still fits very tightly in the stock. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good+-Near Excellent condition.  

Mechanics:  The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was originally manufactured in December 1941, placing it among the earliest M1 Garands produced around the time the United States entered World War II. As America’s first standard-issue semi-automatic battle rifle, the Garand gave U.S. infantry a tremendous advantage in firepower and reliability over many of its adversaries, serving with distinction throughout World War II and the Korean War. Its legendary reputation led General George S. Patton to famously proclaim, “In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.” This rifle is now fitted with a Springfield Armory barrel dated August 1964, the result of a documented arsenal overhaul at Red River Army Depot, as evidenced by the “RRAD 9-64” marking on the receiver leg. During this refurbishment, the worn original barrel was replaced and the rifle was returned to service for continued military use during the Cold War.

Today, this Garand remains in near excellent mechanical condition. The August 1964 Springfield barrel rates an excellent 9.5/10, with both the muzzle and throat gauging 1, indicating very little wear and plenty of service life remaining. The stock has been sanded and refinished and now presents in near excellent condition, giving the rifle a clean, attractive appearance while preserving its military character. Combining its early December 1941 receiver, documented Red River Army Depot rebuild, and exceptional bore condition, this M1 Garand is a fascinating example of a rifle that served America through multiple eras of military history.
