Our Assessment: This M1 Carbine was produced by Saginaw Steering Gear under the “S’G’” marking between April and July of 1943. Saginaw Steering Gear, a division of General Motors, was one of the many American industrial firms that shifted to wartime arms production during World War II. Their carbines were produced at the Grand Rapids, Michigan plant and represent an important part of the massive wartime manufacturing effort that equipped U.S. and Allied forces.

The rifle is fitted with an Underwood Elliot Fisher barrel dated May 1943, which falls perfectly within the receiver’s production window. As commonly seen on many carbines that passed through postwar arsenal updates, this example includes several later improvements such as a rotary safety, updated magazine catch, and a replacement front sight. The rifle is stocked in an Inland Overton stock set produced by Overton Company for Inland Manufacturing Division. Combining a correct wartime receiver and barrel with typical postwar upgrades, this S’G’ carbine represents a classic example of the widely used and highly collectible WWII M1 Carbine platform.
