Markings: The importer’s marking is on the bottom of the barrel, by the muzzle, and is marked “SSME PLANT CITY FL. CAL 7.62X54R”. The importer’s serial number is on the right side of the action “4110”. The other markings are in Cyrillic and have been Romanized. The barrel shank is marked with an almost entirely faded hammer and sickle surrounded by wheat which indicates the rifle was made at Izhevsk, there is a Cyrillic “S” which indicates the barrel is sniper grade, “1943G” which is the date code (1943 GODA or the year 1943), “ZP4110” and an Izhevsk proof mark (a triangle with an arrow inside). The barrel shank has some faded proof marks. The left side of the barrel shank is marked “32476” which matches the attached scope’s serial number, a common practice on Izhevsk snayperskaya rifles. The scope’s base is marked “4110” but it lacks any other markings, authentic scope bases feature proof marks from the factory of origin. The bolt is marked “4110” but it appears the original serial number was removed before this marking was added. Most of the bolt’s markings have faded but an Izhevsk proof is still visible on the safety. Please note, the bolt appears to be an authentic snayperskaya one with the distinct long bent handle, but it appears that the original serial number has been removed before it was serial matched to this rifle. The bottom of the magazine has had the original serial number “3679” struck out and the barrel shank’s serial number added with electric pencil. The magazine also has an Izhevsk proof. The barrel bands have Izhevsk proof marks. The right side of the butt has a post-WWII refurbishment mark from Arsenal No. 1 located in Balakleya. The right side of the forend, just ahead of the finger groove, is marked “E”. The bottom of the forend is marked “N” above scattered characters and “D” just ahead of the magazine. The top of the wrist has refurbishment markings.
Barrel Length: 29”
Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a dovetailed post on a ramp with a protective hood. There is also a tangent leaf rear sight with a “U”-notch which is graduated in 100s of meters from 1-20, inclusive. There is also a PU (Pritsyel Ukorochyennyy which translates to shortened sight) 3.5×21 scope which has been screwed onto the left side of the receiver. The scope features the serial number “No 32476” and is marked with a hammer and sickle under a star and the date of manufacture “1943”. The scope is adjustable and features a German style reticle, the reticle is sharp and the glass is clear. The scope has some light handling wear which includes small scratches, nicks and scuffs. Overall, the scope is in Very Good condition.
Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The arsenal refurbished stocks are two-piece smooth wood featuring a metal forend cap, a slot for the included cleaning rod in the forend, a handguard, two barrel bands, finger grooves on the forend, a through bolt, a straight wrist, a slightly raised comb and a metal butt-plate. There are two sling eyelets: one on the forend and one on the butt. There are light handling marks, nicks and scuffs on the stocks. Notably, the cleaning rod’s slot does not house it properly and it goes too far into the forend, there is a patch repair on the belly and the wood around the scope’s base has been poorly cut to fit it into the stock. The LOP is 13.5” from the trigger to the rear end of the butt-plate. There is some oxidation on the buttplate including a notable patch of erosion at the top leading edge. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Arsenal Refurbished
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is some light erosion concentrated in the grooves.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 81% of its metal finish. There are light-moderate handling marks, nicks and scuffs on the rifle’s metal surfaces. Notably, there is scattered finish loss at the front of the barrel near the muzzle. There are also some scattered light spots of surface oxidation and some cosmoline stains on the magazine. Some of the markings have faded but most remain clear. The screwheads have tool-marks but they remain serviceable. Overall, the rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The safety works correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box Paperwork and Accessories: The rifle comes with a scope described above and a canvas sling with brown leather “dog collar” attachments that secure it to the stock. The sling was likely originally olive-drab but it has taken a tan color. There are some light-moderate handling marks on the sling but it remains in Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Izhevsk Mosin Nagant Model 1891/30 is a bolt-action rifle chambered for 7.62x54R rounds. Although this rifle has been equipped with a scope and snayperskaya bolt, there are some issues to be aware of. First, the base for the scope is not an authentic Soviet one, it appears to be a modern after-market addition to the rifle. The barrel does appear to be sniper grade, but that does not necessarily make the rifle a snayperskaya variant. The scope is a modern reproduction, there is a ring on the eyepiece which is a dead giveaway. The “S” marking may be authentic but the scope’s serial was likely added to the barrel shank after WWII. In summary this rifle should be treated as a standard M91/30 with a snayperskaya bolt and aftermarket scope. Although this specimen lacks the historical authenticity of a true snayperskaya variant of the 91/30, it is still a mechanically sound rifle that should prove effective in the field. Good luck on your bid!
