Our Assessment: The Luger P.08 pistol is one of the most iconic military sidearms of the twentieth century, designed by Georg Luger and widely used by German forces through both World Wars. By the early 1940s, production had shifted to manufacturers such as Mauser, identified by the “byf” code on the toggle, as wartime demand increased. The P.08’s distinctive toggle locked action and ergonomic grip angle made it a highly regarded service pistol, and it remained in widespread use despite the concurrent adoption of the P38. Chambered in 9mm Parabellum, the cartridge introduced in the early 1900s alongside the Luger, the design became one of the most influential handgun systems ever produced.
This example is a 1941 Mauser “byf” code P.08 with matching serialized components. The pistol retains about 97 percent of its refinished metal finish with scattered scratches, light thinning, and areas of corrosion pitting beneath the finish. The checkered walnut grip panels show general handling wear with minor chipped peaks and a deeper compression mark on the left panel but remain intact overall. The bore appears semi bright with worn rifling along with light to moderate erosion and scattered pitting, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly and the pistol includes a single 8 round magazine. Overall, this pistol presents as a wartime Mauser produced Luger that has been refinished while retaining its matching numbered components.
