Our Assessment: The Luger P.08 pistol remains one of the most recognizable military sidearms of the twentieth century. Designed by Georg Luger and adopted by the German military in the early 1900s, the pistol became closely associated with German forces through both World Wars. Its distinctive toggle locked operating system and excellent ergonomics made it both mechanically unique and highly regarded for accuracy. During the Second World War, production was carried out by several manufacturers including Mauser, whose pistols were identified by the “42” factory code used during the early war years. Chambered in 9mm Luger, the cartridge introduced alongside the Luger pistol, the P.08 helped popularize what would become one of the most widely used handgun cartridges in the world.
This example is a Mauser produced P.08 marked with the “42” code and dated 1940 on the chamber. The pistol retains about 94 percent of its metal finish with scattered scratches, thinning on the leading edges and muzzle, and light operational wear visible on the action surfaces. The frame and slide are not matching, though many smaller components retain matching numbers consistent with the slide assembly. The checkered walnut grip panels show handling wear with scratches and chips including a larger compression mark on the right panel but remain intact overall. The bore is bright with defined rifling and light fouling present, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The pistol includes a single 8 round magazine with alloy floorplate numbered to match the slide assembly. The action functions correctly with only minimal play between the barrel assembly and frame.
