Our Assessment: The German P.08 Luger was one of the principal German military sidearms of the first half of the 20th century, distinguished by its short-recoil toggle-locked action, striker-fired mechanism, and unmistakable grip profile. Mauser manufactured this example in 1940, as indicated by the “42” maker code on the toggle and “1940” chamber date, with Eagle/655 military acceptance markings appropriate for Mauser production of the period. Serial number 9234m is matching on the frame, barrel extension, and barrel; however, numerous smaller components are mismatched, including the sideplate, toggle components, firing pin, takedown lever, trigger, safety components, and rear connecting pin. The included magazine is likewise nonmatching, making this an extensively parts-mixed wartime P.08 rather than an all-matching collector example.
This pistol retains approximately 65% of the finish remaining on its respective components, with scratches, thinning, operational wear, areas worn to patina or bare metal, scattered corrosion pitting, and light nicks throughout. The checkered walnut grips remain in Very Good condition with handling wear, scratches, faint compression marks, and some smoothing along the edges, but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with defined rifling but shows light erosion, moderate pitting, and fouling, rating 6/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with barely perceptible play between the barrel assembly and frame, though we did not fire this pistol. One 8-round magazine and a leather holster are included.
