Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 62, introduced in 1932, is a slide-action, pump-action rifle that embodies the spirit and innovation of early 20th-century American firearms design. This rifle was developed as a successor to the Winchester Models 1890 and 1906, offering improvements in both function and manufacturing efficiency. Chambered primarily for the .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges, the Model 62 became a favorite among small game hunters, farmers, and recreational shooters for its versatility, reliability, and ease of use.
The Model 62 was designed with a simplicity that allowed shooters to quickly and easily switch between different types of .22 ammunition, catering to a variety of shooting conditions and purposes. Its pump-action mechanism provided a fun and engaging shooting experience, combined with the rapid follow-up shots and ease of handling that were particularly suited for target shooting and small game hunting. The rifle’s 23-inch barrel and tubular magazine, which varied in capacity depending on the ammunition used, were key features that contributed to its popularity.
Manufactured until 1958, the Winchester Model 62 saw several variations, including the Model 62A, which introduced minor changes to improve durability and production. Its historical significance lies not only in its widespread use and popularity but also in its reflection of the evolving landscape of American firearm manufacturing and recreational shooting during the first half of the 20th century. Today, the Winchester Model 62 is highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts for its craftsmanship, historical value, and as a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era in American shooting culture.
