Our Assessment: This M1 Carbine was manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms in 1943 and retains what appears to be its original Winchester barrel. Carbines from this period reflect peak wartime production, and Winchester was one of the original prime contractors producing complete rifles in-house. This example features the early removable spring tube configuration, a less common and more desirable feature among collectors as it was soon replaced during production.
The rifle is fitted in a Trimble, Tennessee stock produced by Trimble Nursery and Furniture Company, bearing an “FJA” cartouche for Frank J. Atwood, typically associated with National Postal Meter carbines. The stock also shows a Red River Army Depot stamp, indicating postwar arsenal inspection or refurbishment. This combination of an early Winchester-produced rifle with a desirable feature set and postwar service markings makes for a solid and interesting example of a WWII M1 Carbine.
