Our Assessment: This Winchester M1 Carbine was manufactured in 1944 and represents one of the more interesting variations encountered by collectors. The receiver bears a “D” marked serial number, indicating it is one of the duplicate serial number carbines produced during wartime production. These duplicate serial numbers resulted from a manufacturing overlap between Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Inland Division, requiring the addition of the “D” suffix to distinguish the duplicate-numbered rifles. Such carbines occupy a unique niche in M1 Carbine collecting due to their unusual production history and relative scarcity compared to standard production examples.
This rifle retains its Winchester-produced barrel, an important feature for collectors seeking original manufacturer-correct components. Also included are twenty magazines consisting of a mixture of 5, 15, and 30 round capacities, providing a substantial accessory package for both collecting and shooting purposes. The M1 Carbine was one of the most successful American small arms of World War II, prized for its lightweight design, compact handling, and reliability in the field. With its 1944 production date, desirable Winchester barrel, and uncommon duplicate serial number designation, this carbine represents an interesting example of a wartime Winchester M1 Carbine.
