Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. It has more than earned its nickname of “The Rifleman’s Rifle” and is one of the most iconic rifles around. This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade rifle chambered in .22 Hornet that was made in 1938. The .22 Hornet or 5.6×36mmR Hornet is a varminting, small-game hunting, survival and competition centerfire rifle cartridge commercially introduced in 1930. This Super Grade has an attractive grain wood with an ebony nose cap, grip cap, cheekpiece and nicer checkering than would be found on the Standard Rifles. This example is in Outstanding condition, showing little use. It retains about 99% of its blue finish, has a well preserved stock, a bright bore and strong mechanics. The fit and finish is fantastic, the craftsmanship is evident and everything comes together in perfect harmony for a wonderful rifle the likes of which aren’t encountered much these days. Pre-64 Model 70s have significant collector interest, and the Super Grades even more. The Super Grades account for only 2.73% of total pre-64 Model 70 production, the .22 Hornet was a fairly popular and desirable chambering, with 20,306 rifles being produced. This incredibly well preserved Model 70 is a must have for any Winchester collection. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding!
