The checkering is sharp. There are a couple of light handling and storage marks. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. This stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright, the rifling is sharp. There is some scattered minor erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion and for the age, the bore rates 8 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are scattered spots of minor oxidation and edge-thinning. The metal shows a few light scratches and scuff marks. There are a few small scrapes on the bolt rails (the bolt still cycles smoothly). The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions Correctly. The manual safety functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a lovely early Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 made in 1937. A fairly scarce variant that was made in the 2nd year of production. It is chambered for 7x57mm Mauser, one of about 1,400 of the model chambered for this cartridge. This early smokeless cartridge was developed in the 1890s, but remains in production today and is popular for use in hunting small to medium game. It is quite versatile with a fairly flat trajectory, modest recoil, and a wide variety of loadings are typically available. The rifle itself is in Fine condition with wear primarily in the stock, consistent with responsible use in the field. The stock has Super-Grade style sling mounts, so it may be a replacement stock, or had different sling mounts installed. The rifle has a nice bore and the mechanics are strong. This should still prove to be a great hunting rifle for the lucky winner. That said, as a pre-64 Model 70 in high condition and a scarce variant, it will also make a great addition for the collector. Please see our photos, good luck and happy bidding!
