Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 94AE XTR .307 Win 20” Lever Action Rifle is a high-performance variant of the classic Winchester Model 1894, designed to handle modern, high-pressure cartridges while maintaining the iconic lever-action design. Introduced in the early 1980s, the Model 94AE (Angle Eject) was a major improvement over previous Winchester 94 models, featuring a redesigned receiver that allowed spent casings to eject at an angle rather than straight up. This modification made it easier to mount a scope, addressing one of the traditional limitations of lever-action rifles.
Chambered in .307 Winchester, the Model 94AE XTR was designed to deliver ballistics similar to the .308 Winchester but in a lever-action platform. The .307 Win cartridge is a rimmed, high-velocity round capable of taking down medium to large game, making this rifle an excellent choice for deer, elk, and black bear hunting. With its 20-inch barrel, the rifle maintains a balance of power and maneuverability, ideal for brush hunting and fast target acquisition. The XTR (Extra Finish) designation signifies a premium grade of wood and metal finishing, giving the rifle a more refined and polished appearance compared to standard models.
The Winchester Model 94AE XTR retains classic lever-action styling, featuring a walnut stock, a blued finish, and a tubular magazine that holds up to six rounds. The addition of the cross-bolt safety in later AE models improved handling and made the rifle safer for modern shooters. Though the .307 Winchester cartridge never achieved widespread popularity, rifles chambered for it remain sought after by collectors and hunters who appreciate its unique blend of power and lever-action heritage. Today, the Model 94AE XTR in .307 Win is a desirable firearm for those who admire classic Winchester craftsmanship combined with modern shooting performance.
