Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER ® MODEL 9422 XTR – .22 S-L-L.R. / MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. — WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL”. The top of the barrel is marked with the Winchester “WP” proof. The bottom of the frame and lever assembly are marked “F535684”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade and is dovetailed to a serrated, and ramped base. The sight hood is missing. The rear sight is a “U” notch leaf and elevator style sight. The top of the receiver is grooved to accept claw-style mounts.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a straight wrist, straight comb, checkered black plastic Winchester buttplate, and barrel band on the forend. There are a few scratches and compressions along with a few minor chips in the varnish. The checkering is crisp and the peaks are sharp. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are some light scratches throughout, especially concentrated on the left side of the receiver. There is light operational wear. The brass magazine tube has moderate oxidation. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp to lightly tool marked. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The magazine tube The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 9422 XTR is widely regarded as one of the finest rimfire lever action rifles produced in the late 20th century, introduced in 1972 as a modern counterpart to the classic Model 94. Built with a solid steel receiver and traditional walnut furniture, the 9422 offered a level of quality and fit that set it apart from many contemporary rimfire rifles. The XTR designation denotes a higher grade configuration, featuring enhanced wood and finish. Chambered for .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle cartridges, the rifle reflects the enduring versatility of rimfire ammunition, with the .22 LR cartridge, introduced in 1887, remaining one of the most widely used and accessible rounds in the world. This 1984 example retains approximately 98 percent of its original blued finish, with light handling marks and minor scratches, most notably on the left side of the receiver. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9.5 out of 10, indicating minimal use. The checkered walnut stock set remains in Very Good condition, showing a few scattered compressions and small finish imperfections, while retaining crisp checkering and strong overall appearance. The rifle is missing its front sight hood, but retains its original iron sights and grooved receiver for scope mounting. Markings are clear and well defined, and the mechanical function remains correct.
