Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER MODEL 9422 XTR .22 S-L-L.R. / MADE IN NEW HAVEN CONN., U.S.A. – WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL”. The top of the barrel is marked with a circled “WP” proof mark. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 20 1/2″ nominal
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramp, soldered to the barrel. The rear sight is a spring leaf U notch with elevator dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is grooved for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece checkered walnut, banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and checkered Winchester plastic buttplate. The LOP is 14″ from trigger to buttplate. There are scratches and some light compression dents throughout. There is a little discoloration on the belly of the stock. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is light fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its original finish. There are a few light scratches and corrosion freckling scattered throughout. There is handling and operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: This rifle appears to be functional. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 9422 XTR is a desirable rimfire lever-action rifle, combining classic Winchester styling with upgraded XTR features and excellent versatility in .22 Short, Long, and Long Rifle. Manufactured in 1981, this example features a 20 1/2” nominal barrel, tubular magazine, hooded beaded front sight, adjustable rear sight, and a grooved receiver for optic mounting. The checkered walnut stocks and XTR presentation give it a more refined appearance than the standard 9422, while retaining the smooth handling and practical utility that made these rifles popular with collectors, plinkers, and small-game hunters.
This rifle remains in Very Good overall condition, retaining about 97% of its original blued finish. The metal shows a few light scratches, scattered corrosion freckling, and light handling and operational wear, but the screw heads remain sharp and the markings are clear. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling present; in this writer’s opinion, it rates 9.5/10. Mechanically, the rifle appears functional and has passed a basic mechanic’s check, though it has not been test fired.
The two-piece checkered walnut stock set is also in Very Good condition, showing scratches, some light compression dents, and a little discoloration on the belly of the stock, with no chips or cracks. The banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and checkered Winchester plastic buttplate preserve the rifle’s correct XTR-era sporting profile, with a 14” length of pull. The included box adds collector interest, though the serial number is not legible on the box. Overall, this is a clean Winchester 9422 XTR with high remaining original finish, a strong bore, functional mechanics, and desirable rimfire lever-action appeal.
