Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 94 XTR Big Bore Carbine is a late-1970s production lever-action rifle chambered in the powerful .375 Winchester cartridge. Built on the strengthened Big Bore variant of the Model 94, it features a 20″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, checkered walnut stocks, banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and orange Winchester buttpad. The rifle retains its factory iron sight setup with a hooded beaded front blade on a serrated ramp and an elevator-adjustable U-notch rear sight, while the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled for a receiver sight, maintaining useful flexibility for both traditional and modern sighting configurations.
Condition is Very Good to Excellent overall, with the rifle retaining about 98% of its original blue finish. The metal shows only scattered minor scratches on the receiver and barrel, along with light operational wear, while the screw heads remain sharp and the markings are clear. The walnut stock set is in Very Good condition, showing minor handling wear and a small crack at the upper right of the tang. Despite this crack, the wood remains solid and serviceable, though it should be monitored for progression. The included factory box is a strong positive and enhances collector appeal.
The bore is outstanding, remaining bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only minor storage oil fouling, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion and showing no meaningful signs of use beyond factory testing. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the trigger pull is crisp, though the rifle has not been test fired by us. As with any used firearm, a thorough cleaning and inspection are advisable before use, especially given long-term storage conditions. Overall, this is a highly desirable Winchester 94 XTR Big Bore in .375 Winchester, offering excellent bore condition, strong remaining finish, factory box inclusion, and solid mechanical performance, with the small tang crack being the primary condition limitation.
