Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1894 rifle followed the other John Browning designed lever action rifles to become one of the most famous and popular hunting rifles of all time. It was the first commercial sporting rifle to sell over 7,000,000 units, making the name “Winchester” synonymous with all lever action rifles. It was also the first commercial American repeating rifle built to be used with smokeless powder. It was introduced in 1894 in two black powder cartridges, the .32-40 and .38-55 Win. rounds, but by the next year Winchester had developed a different steel composition that could handle higher pressures, and the .30-30 Win. family of cartridges was born.
This rifle is in Very Good to Fine condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original blue finish with only minor thinning on the edges, tangs, and muzzle. The case coloring on the lever and hammer remains exceptionally strong, a notable highlight for a rifle of this age. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9/10. The rifle is further enhanced by a period Lyman tang-mounted peep sight, offering improved accuracy and a classic upgrade commonly seen on working rifles of the time. The walnut stocks are also very well-preserved, showing only light handling marks and maintaining a strong finish overall. The action functions correctly with a crisp trigger, and the addition of the tang sight combined with the 26” barrel makes this a particularly desirable configuration for both collectors and shooters.
Overall, this is a high-condition early 20th century example of a classic American lever-action rifle, combining historical significance, excellent preservation, and practical shootability. With its strong original finish, desirable features, and solid mechanical function, it stands as a standout piece from Winchester Repeating Arms Company’s golden era of production.
