Sights/Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on this rifle. The receiver has been installed with a pair of bases and rings holding Zeiss Conquest 3,5-10×44 scope. There are light handling marks, no major defects. The scope has a duplex reticle and the glass is clear, it rates in about Excellent condition.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut with a capped pistol-grip, black nosecap, fluted straight comb with cheek-piece, inlet sling swivel mounts, recoil lug, and a black Decelerator rubber buttpad. There are a couple of light compressions, mostly infrequently disbursed over the left side. The checkering is strong. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has some wear on the edges. Overall, the stock rates in Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows little to no operation wear. There are a couple scratches on the trigger guard. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pushed to the front, the safety is OFF. If pulled to the rear all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This rifle comes with its attached scope as mentioned above and a black nylon sling.
Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 70 Classic Super Grade rifle chambered in .25-06 Remington and was manufactured in 2001. The post-64 Super Grade has nicer-grain wood and features the classic cut checkering rather than the less expensive to produce press-checkering. The rifle is in Excellent condition with scant evidence of use. The bluing is rich, the bore is bright, and the action is smooth. The .25-06 is a nice caliber for deer or varmints and a perfect caliber to get a classic American rifle like the Model 70 in, you literally can’t go wrong here. There are differing opinions on the quality and merit of post-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifles, but rest assured this Super Grade version has all the virtue of its predecessors. Good luck and happy bidding! – L.S.
