Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed into a checkered ramped base that is screwed into the barrel. The base is grooved for the attached protective hood. The rear sight is an adjustable semi-buckhorn u-notch dovetailed into a ramped base that is fixed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with two Leupold-style quick-detach bases which have mounted on them a Burris 1.5-6x scope. The scope body has a few minor scuffs on the tops of the bells, the glass is fairly clear, and overall, it rates in Fine condition.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered black synthetic composite, capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a ribbed black rubber Limbsaver buttpad. Minor scuffs are dotted throughout the stock, most notably on either side below the receiver. The upper left edge has a more notable ding. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad and 13” to the back of the composite. The pad shows only minor wear from handling. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.
Type of Finish: Stainless
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but minor stubborn fouling is peppered throughout.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. Near the stock ding there is a light scuff in the receiver metal. Very minor nicks and drag lines are peppered throughout the barrel, with the most notable being on the underside just ahead of the forend nose. There is minor operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine-to-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: The scope as described above.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle which has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years. This example is a Classic Stainless with a 24” barrel and a handsome checkered black composite stock. Efforts were made to set things back to rights when it came to the Model 70 and the classic series saw the return of the lauded control-feed bolt. Well out of the company’s fallow period, this example was produced sometime in the period between 2001-2002, as the .375 H&H chambering was produced for only a short time. Chambered as it is in the beastly .375 H&H, you have the capability of taking down any of the Big Five game animals with this rifle. The included Burris scope will certainly aid one in that pursuit. By appearances, this rifle appears to have spent more time in the safe than out, as there are only a few marks on the stock—however, the bore tells us that this rifle was indeed enjoyed. The rifle rates in Fine-to-Excellent condition and looks great, this will make for a powerful addition to a Winchester or hunting rifle collection. Good luck and happy bidding!
