Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. It has more than earned its nickname of “The Riflemans Rifle“, a true icon. This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle that was made in 1945 and has been rechambered to .22 K-Hornet. It is a Standard Rifle configuration with a straight comb stock. Lysle Kilbourn was a prominent New York gunsmith who created this wildcat from the .22 Hornet by moving the shoulder forward to increase case capacity and achieve higher velocities and greater energies than the original .22 Hornet. The cartridge still has a dedicated following among varmint hunters and when married with a Winchester Model 70 it makes for a very cool rifle. The rifle is in Fine condition, retaining a lot of its blued finish. The bore is sweet and the mechanics are strong. This is a classic, proven, rifle that will be a great shooter. With a nice scope installed, this rifle could be back out in the field dropping varmints for another lifetime. Please see our photos and good luck!
Some are hot, some are not, but thankfully most can be shot!
