Our Assessment The Winchester Model 54 was Winchester’s first bolt-action rifle designed for civilian use, serving as a precursor to the legendary Model 70. Produced from 1925 to 1936, the Model 54 was built with high-quality materials, featuring a strong Mauser-style action and a smooth bolt throw. This example, chambered in .30 W.C.F. (.30-30 Win), is a somewhat uncommon chambering for the Model 54, as most were produced in .30-06 Springfield and other high-powered calibers.
This rifle is an excellent representation of early 20th-century Winchester craftsmanship. The nickel-steel barrel ensures durability, while the robust action provides reliable performance. The rifle’s overall condition is very good, with a solid bore and well-preserved stock. The sights are intact, and the drilled and tapped receiver offers the option to mount an optic, making this rifle a great candidate for both historical collection and practical shooting.
For collectors, this is an opportunity to own a piece of Winchester history—one of the earliest American bolt-action sporting rifles that helped shape modern hunting and precision shooting rifles. Its C&R status further enhances its desirability, and given the increasing scarcity of these rifles, it’s a fine addition to any Winchester collection.
