Sights/Optics: There is a brass bead at the muzzle, it is not original to the gun. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a grooved flat-bottom slide handle, flat-bottom pistol grip, straight comb, and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. There are a few light nicks, scuffs and small scratches, most notable in the right of the grip. There is a tiny loss at the right-front edge of the wrist. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light wear with stubborn fouling around the edges and three circular dimples near the heel in otherwise well defined checkering. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original, numbers match.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There is no erosion in the bore. There are light tool marks at the bead where it was dressed. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9+ out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 94% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning lightly at some edges. The balance is mostly in normal operational wear. There are a few other scattered minor marks. The screw heads are tool marked with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage post-war Winchester Model 42 standard grade .410 bore pump-action shotgun from 1961. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. It is in Very Good condition, showing wear consistent with its age and responsible use over the last 65 years. The shotgun retains a nice bore and strong mechanics. It would make a fine addition to any collection, especially if you have a new generation of shooters to train. Please see our photos and good luck!
