Markings: The left side of the left barrel is marked “WINCHESTER-12 GAUGE / 2 3/4 CHAM”. The upper tang is marked “21309”. The water table is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. MODEL 21 / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN. CONN”. The barrel flat is marked “21309”. The bottom of the left barrel is marked “WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL / FULL”. The bottom of the right barrel is marked “MOD. / WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL K”. The forend and forend iron are marked “21309”.

Sights / Optics: There is a single metal bead front sight atop a matte serrated rib.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two-piece checkered walnut with a semi-pistol grip, straight comb, beaver tail forend, and a vented rubber buttpad. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are spots of light furniture finish loss throughout the high contact areas. The left side of the forend has a crack at the front. There are no chips. The LOP measures 14″ from the front trigger to the rear of the buttpad. Overall, the stocks are in about Good – Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright with no visible erosion. There are minor scratches throughout the barrels. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate at a 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains 92% of its blued finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches, thinning, and light surface rust forming throughout. There are spots of surface rust forming in the serrations, a few spots on the barrel, and forend button. There is thinning at the muzzle, lower tang, and bottom of the receiver. There are a few light nicks on the matte rib. The screw heads are sharp. The markings remain clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup is tight with no play. The selective ejectors and safety function properly. We have not test fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 21 is a classic American hammerless boxlock side-by-side first manufactured during the early 1930s. Unlike Winchester’s mass-produced sporting shotguns, Model 21s received extensive hand fitting and were offered in numerous configurations to suit individual sporting requirements; surviving factory records often document their original dates and specifications. This 1948 example is configured with 30″ barrels, fixed Modified and Full chokes, single trigger, selective ejectors, a beavertail forend, and matching-numbered major components.
This shotgun is in about Good condition overall and retains about 92% of its original blued finish, with scratches, thinning, scattered light surface rust, and wear at the muzzle, lower tang, and underside of the receiver. The two-piece checkered walnut stocks rate in about Good-Very Good condition, showing scratches, compression marks, finish loss in high-contact areas, and a crack at the front of the forend without chips. The bores are bright with no visible erosion and minor scratches; in this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 9 out of 10. The action, safety, and ejectors function correctly, and the action locks up tightly without play. No box, paperwork, or accessories are included.
