Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1897 is one of the most iconic American shotguns ever produced, designed by none other than John Moses Browning. Introduced in 1897 as an improved version of the Winchester 1893, the Model 1897 became an instant success due to its strong yet lightweight receiver, external hammer, and smooth pump action. It was manufactured in a variety of configurations, including riot, trench, and sporting models, making it a highly versatile firearm. This shotgun, with its 20-inch barrel, is indicative of the riot model, which was favored for law enforcement and personal defense applications due to its shorter profile and rapid follow-up shot capability.
The Model 1897 is most famous for its service during World War I as a U.S. military trench gun. Equipped with a bayonet lug and heat shield, the trench variant proved devastating in close-quarters combat, earning a fierce reputation among soldiers and adversaries alike. Beyond military use, it was widely adopted by law enforcement, prison guards, and express companies as a reliable defensive shotgun. The civilian sporting variants were just as popular, becoming a favorite among hunters and sport shooters throughout the early 20th century. Its durability and effectiveness kept it in production until 1957, with over one million units produced.
For collectors, this Model 1897 represents a significant piece of Winchester history. Manufactured in 1905, it falls well within the Curio & Relic (C&R) category, making it a desirable find for those interested in early 20th-century American firearms. The wear and patina on this shotgun tell a story of its long service life, and for enthusiasts of classic pump-action shotguns, the Winchester 1897 remains one of the most sought-after designs. Whether for display, historical appreciation, or as a functioning piece of firearms history, this Winchester is sure to be a valued addition to any collection.
