Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1897 was one of the most influential pump-action shotguns ever produced. Designed by the legendary John Moses Browning, the Model 1897 was an improved version of the earlier Model 1893, built to accommodate smokeless powder loads. With its exposed hammer, robust receiver, and smooth cycling action, the 1897 became an instant success, widely used by hunters, law enforcement, and military forces around the world. This example, manufactured in 1898, qualifies as an antique, making it a highly desirable piece for collectors.

The Model 1897 gained a reputation for reliability and durability, particularly in harsh environments. It was famously employed by U.S. forces during World War I as a trench shotgun, where its short barrel and rapid-fire capability made it a formidable close-quarters weapon. Even after military use, it remained a favorite among sportsmen and law enforcement agencies well into the 20th century. The fact that this shotgun has been refinished and still retains 90% of its finish speaks to the care it has received over its long lifespan.

For the collector, this Model 1897 represents a significant piece of Winchester history, embodying the innovation of the late 19th century and the craftsmanship of the golden age of American firearms manufacturing. The inclusion of interchangeable chokes adds versatility, making this not only a great display piece but also a functional shooter. Whether as part of a historical collection or for use in Cowboy Action Shooting, this Winchester Model 1897 is an excellent find. Please see our high-quality photos and good luck on your bid! -M.C.
