Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1895 Carbine, manufactured in 1911 and chambered in .30 Army/.30-40 Krag, is a desirable C&R-eligible lever-action carbine with strong early 20th-century Winchester appeal. The Model 1895’s internal box magazine distinguishes it from Winchester’s tubular-magazine lever actions and makes it especially well suited to pointed or military-style cartridges such as .30-40 Krag. The 22″ barrel, Type 1 carbine ladder rear sight, pinned blade front sight, finger-grooved forend, straight-grip walnut stock, and carbine-style trapdoor buttplate give this example a distinctive and collectible sporting-military profile.
The bore is a strong point, described as bright with sharp rifling, minor erosion, and light fouling, rating 8.5/10 in the writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, though the rifle has not been test fired. The metal retains about 65% of its original blued finish, with moderate handling and operational wear, scratches, and corrosion staining most noticeable on the receiver. The markings remain clear, and the screw heads range from sharp to lightly tooled but serviceable, which supports its overall appeal despite visible use.
The stock is the primary collector caveat. It has been sanded and refinished, with proud metal at the wrist, scattered scratches and compression dents, and some oil darkening around the receiver, though there are no chips or cracks. The trapdoor buttplate remains a nice carbine feature, but the absence of cleaning rods reduces completeness. Overall, this is a solid and appealing Winchester Model 1895 Carbine with a desirable .30-40 Krag chambering, correct carbine features, functional mechanics, and a strong bore, with value moderated by refinished wood, missing rods, receiver wear, corrosion staining, and moderate original finish loss.
