Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade pinned to a base integral to the barrel. The rear sight is a “u”-notch elevator sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel; the notch is fine-adjustable for elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a Schnabel forend with ebony tip, straight wrist, straight comb and a crescent steel buttplate. The LOP is 13″ from trigger to buttplate. The stock has been refinished. There are light sanding marks as well as some repairs that have been finished over. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Good to Very Good condition as refinished. 

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original, but has been touched up with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is light fouling. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 60% of its original finish. The receiver has thinned bluing and has been touched up with cold blue. There are scratches and some light corrosion freckles throughout. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good to Very Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1895 was John M. Browning’s final lever-action design for Winchester and one of the company’s most advanced sporting rifles of the period. Unlike earlier Winchester lever guns, it uses a fixed box magazine that safely accommodates pointed bullets and full-power military cartridges. This 1922 example is chambered in .30 Army, better known as .30-40 Krag, and features a 28″ barrel, straight-grip walnut stocks, Schnabel forend with ebony tip, crescent buttplate, and traditional barrel-mounted sights.

Introduced in 1895, the Model 1895 served both sporting and military markets and was chambered for powerful cartridges that exceeded the practical limits of Winchester’s tubular-magazine rifles. The .30-40 Krag chambering connected the rifle directly to the first small-bore smokeless military cartridge adopted by the United States, while the strong Browning-designed action made the Model 1895 popular with hunters pursuing large North American game. Sporting examples with long barrels and classic straight-grip stocks remain particularly desirable among collectors of early 20th-century Winchester rifles.

This rifle retains approximately 60% of its original finish, with thinned blue, cold-blue touchup, scattered scratches, and light corrosion freckling. The refinished walnut stocks remain in Good to Very Good condition with sanding marks, finished-over repairs, and scattered handling wear but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 9/10, while the action functions correctly. Overall, this is a solid late-production Model 1895 in Good to Very Good condition with strong collector and sporting appeal.
