Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine, manufactured in 1919 and chambered in .44-40 W.C.F., is a desirable C&R-eligible lever-action carbine with classic Winchester character. The 20″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, pinned blade front sight, ladder rear sight, straight-grip walnut stock, and steel shotgun-style carbine buttplate all support the traditional Model 1892 SRC configuration. The .44-40 chambering is especially appealing in this platform due to its strong historical association with Winchester lever actions and Old West-era firearms.

Condition-wise, this example is best viewed as a refinished rifle rather than a high-originality collector piece. It retains about 90% of its current blue finish, but the finish is not original, and the description notes scratches and polish marks that were blued over, softened edges, and some softened or hard-to-read markings. The Century Arms import marks on the lower tang and the unknown hand-marked symbol on the left side of the receiver are additional collector caveats. The screw heads are tooled but serviceable, and the rifle rates Good overall as refinished.

The bore is a positive feature, described as semi-bright with well-defined rifling, light erosion and pitting, and light fouling, rating 8/10 in the writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the hammer has a half-cock safety position, and the trigger is crisp, though the rifle has not been test fired. The refinished walnut stock shows scratches, sanding marks, proud metal in places, repairs, and oil and iron staining, but no major structural cracks. Overall, this is an attractive and functional Winchester 1892 SRC in a desirable caliber, best suited as a refinished shooter-grade or representative collector example, with value moderated by the refinish, import marks, softened markings, stock repairs, and general evidence of prior use.
