Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 25% of its metal finish. The finish has worn to a blue/brown patina. There are scratches, handling wear, and corrosion staining throughout. The screw heads show signs of light tooling, but still have strong and serviceable slots. The pins are unmarred. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fair condition, mostly due to bore condition.
Mechanics: The action is a bit sticky but gets going with a little effort, otherwise the action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: none
Our Assessment: The Model 1892 is one of John Browning’s most refined lever-action designs, scaled for small-bore cartridges and prized for its smooth operation. This 24 inch octagon barrel configuration reflects a classic sporting pattern of the early twentieth century, chambered in .25-20 WCF, a cartridge introduced in the 1890s for small game and varmint use. With its capped forend, crescent buttplate, and traditional semi-buckhorn rear sight, the rifle retains the unmistakable lines of a turn-of-the-century Winchester sporting arm.
The rifle now presents with a dark bore showing defined rifling but light erosion, significant pitting, and fouling throughout, rating 4 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 25 percent of its original blued finish, having worn to a blue and brown patina with scratches, handling wear, and corrosion staining throughout. Markings on the barrel and tang remain clear and legible. Screw heads show light tooling but retain strong, serviceable slots, and pins are unmarred. The two-piece walnut stocks feature a straight grip, straight comb, and metal crescent buttplate, with a 13 inch length of pull. The wood shows scratches, compression dents, oil darkening around the receiver, and a small crack at the upper tang, rating in Good condition for a C&R of this age.
Mechanically, the lever action is somewhat sticky but functions correctly once in motion. The hammer retains a half-cock safety position, and the trigger breaks crisply. The upper tang has been drilled and tapped for a peep sight, though none is installed. As a 1910 production Winchester 1892 with a 24 inch octagon barrel, this rifle remains a representative example of an early smokeless-era small-bore lever action, showing honest age and wear consistent with over a century of use.
