Sights: The front sight is a Lyman white beaded arching blade dovetailed to a base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a Lyman No. 6 dual leaf sight with one folding “V”-notch leaf and one flat leaf with a white triangle aim guide in a base dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The left side of the receiver is equipped with a Lyman Model 21 peep sight (rare). The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a tang sight (none present).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, and a checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The stocks have some light bubbling and crazing, more so on the buttstock than the forearm. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear around the edges with sharp checkering and lettering. Overall, the stocks are in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains approximately 94% of its metal finish. The finish is slightly thinning at all edges. The barrel retains strong finish throughout. The receiver has scattered faint wear, more notable in the flanks and toward the bottom-front, with light dustings of oxidation. There is some scattered discoloration from oxidation on the loading gate. There are some light nicks and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. The lever locks up solidly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 1886 is another of John Browning’s industry-changing designs. It is our favorite Winchester here, certainly the strongest built at the time and function leads to beauty. The 1886 was available in a variety of cartridges over its nearly 40 years of production and, while there were standard configurations, there were also special-order features which led to a wide number of variations available to the collector today. This is a nice example of an 1886 with Lyman barrel sights and a rare Model 21 Lyman aperture sight attached to the side of the receiver, as well as a takedown action. It is chambered for the powerful .45-70. The rifle retains approximately 94% of its metal finish. Any 1886 from the original 1886-1928 production run would be collectible, but this example in particular will make a fine addition to a Winchester collection. Please see our pictures and good luck!
