Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1885 High Wall is one of the most famous single-shot rifles of the 19th century, designed by John Browning and manufactured by Winchester. Its falling block action was one of the strongest of its time, making it highly favored among long-range shooters and hunters alike.
This particular example, chambered in .32-40 WCF, was widely used for target shooting and varmint hunting, a popular caliber in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Manufactured in 1893, this rifle qualifies as an Antique, meaning it can be owned and transferred without the need for federal paperwork in most jurisdictions.
With its Tasco 6-24×40 scope, this rifle is already set up for precision shooting. While not period-correct, the optic enhances its usability for modern target shooters. Whether you’re a collector of early Winchester firearms or a shooter looking for a classic single-shot rifle with excellent accuracy, this Model 1885 High Wall is a great find.
