Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1885 High Wall, originally designed by John Browning, has been faithfully reintroduced in modern production by Miroku of Japan, maintaining the strength and elegance of the original falling block design while benefiting from contemporary manufacturing standards. This 2016 example continues that legacy, chambered in .45-70 Government, a cartridge introduced in 1873 for U.S. military service and still widely respected for its power and versatility. The pairing of the High Wall action with the .45-70 remains historically appropriate, reflecting the strength of the design and its long-standing association with full-power rifle cartridges.
This rifle features a 28″ octagonal barrel and retains approximately 97% of its original blued finish, with only light handling marks, a few minor scratches, and small areas of light corrosion visible. The checkered walnut stock is in Very Good condition, showing a few light compression dents and some flattening of the checkering, but no cracks or structural concerns. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling, rating 9 out of 10. The rifle is equipped with traditional open sights and has provisions for a tang-mounted peep sight, though the plug screw is missing and a longer tang screw is currently installed, indicating a previously mounted sight.
Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly, demonstrating the solid lockup and smooth operation expected from the High Wall design. This modern production example offers the visual appeal and handling characteristics of a classic single shot rifle while providing the reliability of current manufacture. The combination of strong overall condition, desirable chambering, and traditional configuration makes this a well-executed representation of the historic 1885 pattern.
