Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 12 is one of the most celebrated American pump-action shotguns, introduced in 1912 and produced for decades in sporting, target, military, and law enforcement configurations. Known as the “Perfect Repeater,” the Model 12 earned its reputation through its smooth slide action, forged and machined construction, excellent handling, and wide acceptance among hunters and competitive shooters. Skeet Grade examples are especially desirable to collectors and shooters, as they were configured for clay target work and often display factory skeet markings, ribbed barrels, and specialized choke designations. This example was manufactured in 1948 and is C&R eligible.
This Winchester Model 12 Skeet Grade is a 12 gauge pump-action shotgun chambered for 2 3/4″ shells, fitted with a 27″ vent-rib barrel and marked “WS-1,” indicating Winchester Skeet 1 choking. The shotgun retains about 80% of its original blue finish, with scattered scratches and dings, receiver thinning, muzzle finish loss, a heavy abrasion at the front left side of the receiver, and operational wear along the action, barrel, and magazine tube. The refinished wood stocks are in Excellent condition with only minor handling marks and scuffs, and feature a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, rubber buttpad, and 13 3/4″ length of pull. The bore is bright with minor fouling, no erosion, and rates 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, though the shotgun has not been test fired. Overall, this is a Very Good-Fine condition 1948 Winchester Model 12 Skeet Grade with desirable factory skeet markings, a vent-rib barrel, strong bore, and classic Winchester target-gun appeal.
