Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 100 in .284 Winchester is a semi-automatic rifle produced by Winchester Repeating Arms from 1961 to 1973. Designed as a modern sporting rifle, it was intended for hunters who preferred the rapid follow-up shots of a semi-auto while maintaining the power of a traditional hunting cartridge. The rifle features a 22-inch barrel, a removable 4-round box magazine, and a gas-operated action that provides smooth cycling and reduced felt recoil. It is equipped with open sights, including a hooded front sight and an adjustable rear sight, while also being drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

The .284 Winchester cartridge, introduced in 1963, was ahead of its time, offering ballistics similar to a .270 Winchester but in a short-action format. This made the Model 100 in .284 Win a rare and sought-after configuration, as most rifles were chambered in .308 Winchester or .243 Winchester. While the Model 100 gained popularity for its sleek design and reliable performance, it was eventually discontinued due to evolving market trends. Today, collectors and hunters alike seek out the Model 100 in .284 Win, as it represents one of the few semi-automatic rifles chambered in this innovative but underappreciated cartridge.
