Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 101 is a classic over-under shotgun that has earned a reputation for its reliability, craftsmanship, and performance in both field and range settings. This specific model is a 12 gauge with a 3″ chamber, 30″ barrels, and fixed Full/Full chokes, is particularly well-suited for certain shooting sports and hunting applications. Renowned for its robust construction and elegant design, the Winchester Model 101 features an action and receiver made from high-quality steel, ensuring durability and longevity. The barrels, typically crafted from high-grade steel, are designed to withstand the pressures of modern ammunition, especially the 3″ magnum shells this model is chambered for. The 30″ barrels provide a longer sight plane, aiding in accuracy and making the shotgun particularly effective for longer-range shooting. This particular Model 101 comes with fixed Full/Full chokes. These fixed chokes mean that the constriction at the end of the barrel is permanent and not interchangeable. Full chokes provide the tightest constriction, resulting in a dense shot pattern that is optimal for long-range shooting. Having both barrels choked Full makes this shotgun highly effective for specific types of hunting, such as waterfowl hunting or trap shooting, where hitting targets at longer distances is common. The Winchester Model 101 is designed with ergonomics in mind. The stock and forearm are typically made from high-quality walnut, offering a balance of beauty and functionality. The stock is designed to fit comfortably against the shoulder, and the checkering on the grip and forearm provides a secure hold. The shotgun’s weight and balance are carefully distributed to reduce felt recoil and enhance the shooter’s control over the firearm, making it a pleasure to shoot even during extended sessions. Aesthetically, the Winchester Model 101 is a handsome shotgun. The walnut stock features a gloss finish, highlighting the wood’s natural beauty. The receiver is engraved, adding an element of elegance to the overall appearance. The attention to detail in the finish and engraving reflects Winchester’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Given its configuration, this Winchester Model 101 with 30″ barrels and Full/Full chokes is particularly well-suited for long-range shooting applications. It excels in sports like trap shooting and is also an excellent choice for waterfowl hunting, where the ability to reach out and hit birds at a distance is crucial. The 3″ chamber allows for the use of magnum loads, providing extra power and versatility in ammunition choice. Whether on the trap field or in the duck blind, this Model 101 offers the accuracy, power, and aesthetic appeal that shooters and hunters have come to expect from Winchester.
