Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1886, originally designed by John Browning, remains one of the strongest and most respected lever-action platforms ever produced, purpose-built to handle powerful cartridges with reliability and authority. This modern Miroku-produced Deluxe Takedown variant continues that legacy with exceptional fit and finish, reflecting the high standards of Japanese manufacturing under Winchester licensing. Chambered in .45-70 Government, a cartridge with roots dating back to 1873 and long valued for its effectiveness on large and dangerous game, this rifle bridges historical design with modern precision, offering both traditional aesthetics and contemporary performance.
This Deluxe example presents in Excellent condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original finish with only minor handling wear and a few light marks along the top of the octagonal barrel. The richly figured walnut stocks are finely checkered and remain in outstanding shape, showing only minimal signs of use with no chips or cracks. The classic configuration, including the crescent steel buttplate, capped forend, and semi-pistol grip, captures the visual appeal of late 19th century sporting rifles while benefiting from the refined execution characteristic of Miroku production. The takedown design adds a practical element, allowing for convenient transport and storage without compromising structural integrity.
Mechanically, the rifle is excellent, with a smooth lever throw, tight lockup, and a crisp trigger, all indicative of precise machining and careful assembly. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling, reflecting minimal use and strong overall condition. The 26-inch octagonal barrel, paired with traditional semi-buckhorn rear and beaded front sights, provides both visual balance and practical sighting capability. This rifle stands as a faithful and well-executed continuation of the Model 1886 lineage, offering the strength of Browning’s original design combined with modern manufacturing quality.
