Our Assessment: This Winchester/Miroku Model 1886 Short Rifle is a modern 2012 production lever-action rifle chambered in .45-90 W.C.F. and marked “Black Powder Only.” Built on the strong Model 1886 pattern, it combines traditional big-bore Winchester styling with modern Miroku manufacture. The 20″ round barrel, tubular magazine, smooth walnut stocks, capped forend, straight grip, crescent steel buttplate, beaded front sight, and semi-buckhorn rear sight give it a classic short rifle profile. The receiver is also drilled and tapped on the left side for a receiver sight, offering a practical period-style sighting upgrade option.
Condition is Very Good overall, with the rifle retaining about 97% of its original blue finish. The metal shows light scattered scratches along with minor handling and operational wear, but the screw heads remain sharp and the markings are clear. The two-piece smooth walnut stock set is also in Very Good condition, showing light scratches and compression dents throughout, with one more notable gouge on the right side of the buttstock. There are no chips or cracks, and the wood remains solid and attractive.
The bore is a major strength, remaining bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only fouling present, rating 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the lever lock-up is tight, and the trigger is crisp, though the rifle has not been test fired. As with any used firearm, a thorough cleaning and inspection are advisable before use, and the “Black Powder Only” marking should be strictly observed when selecting ammunition. Overall, this is a handsome and desirable Winchester/Miroku Model 1886 Short Rifle in .45-90 W.C.F., offering excellent bore condition, strong mechanics, high remaining finish, and classic big-bore lever-action appeal.
