Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 94 Flat Band represents one of the more recognizable transitional variations of the pre-64 Model 94. Winchester resumed commercial Model 94 production after World War II in late 1945, and the distinctive flat front barrel band appeared during 1946 as the company continued transitioning away from prewar components and manufacturing practices. Flat Band carbines were produced through late 1948 and are now collected as a distinct postwar variation. This example, serial number 1458026, falls solidly within 1947 production; documented Flat Band serial number 1459799 is also confirmed as a 1947 rifle. Chambered in .32 Winchester Special, this carbine retains the classic 20″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, straight-grip walnut furniture, and checkered steel buttplate associated with the period.
This example remains in Good to Very Good condition, retaining about 95% of its original metal finish with scattered scratches, light corrosion freckles, and normal handling and operational wear. The walnut furniture shows scratches and compression dents but remains solid with no chips or cracks. The bright bore is a particularly strong feature, retaining sharp rifling with no observed erosion and only light fouling and rating 9/10. The action functions correctly, including the traditional half-cock hammer safety and lever-actuated trigger safety. With its desirable .32 Winchester Special chambering, strong original finish, excellent bore, and characteristic Flat Band configuration, this is an appealing example of the short-lived postwar Model 94 variation.
