The top of the barrel at the receiver and the top of the receiver’s chamber ring are each marked with an ovalled “WP” proof. The right of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / -NEW HAVEN, CONN.-“. The underside of the receiver is marked “990999”. The upper tang is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / MADE IN U.S.A.”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade pinned into a slotted rectangular base which is fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding ladder sight dovetailed into the barrel. There is a wide “V” notch at the rear of the right for use when the ladder is folded down and a “V” notch in the slider on the ladder. The rear face of the ladder is marked from “0” to “20”. The upper tang is drilled, tapped and filled for an aperture sight (none included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with banded forend, straight grip, straight comb and steel carbine-style buttplate. The forend has some pooled finish, mostly along the top edges. The stocks have some light nicks, scuffs and scratches with handling wear in the grip areas. There are a series of notches at the toe which appear to be intentionally cut. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 12 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has wear at the heel and toe with some minor surface oxidation. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: There are no overt signs of refinishing and the barrel’s finish is Original. The receiver’s finish is slightly matte, almost appearing like the “Japanned” black finish used on Winchester stainless steel barrels. Please see our photos.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion, most near the muzzle. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is generally strong throughout. The receiver has some edge-thinning and scattered minor nicks and scratches. There is finish loss at the proof and assembler’s marks on the receiver. There are a few other scattered minor marks. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool-marked with a strong slot. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety. The lever lock-up is tight and the trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine made in 1928 and chambered in .32-20 Winchester. This rifle is in Very Good-plus condition with about 95% of its finish remaining. The bore is still quite strong and the action functions correctly. This vintage saddle ring carbine has seen minimal wear and is in great mechanical condition. The .32-20 Win. cartridge was once a favorite with farmers, ranchers, pot hunters and trappers. With its condition and pre-WWII manufacture date, this rifle should be of interest to the Winchester collectors. Please see our photos and good luck!
