Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with hand cut checkering, pistol grip, straight comb, black rubber Old English buttpad, black diamonds inset to the top of the wrist and bottom of the grip and beavertail forend. The stocks have a few scattered light nicks and scratches with a few more notable marks on the left of the buttstock below the comb, at the rear edge of the top tang, and in the top-front of the wrist to the right of the tang. There is a small loss at the toe on the right. The checkering is sharp. There are no cracks. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad, 13″ to the back of the wood. The drop at comb is about 1 1/2″, drop at heel is about 2″. The drops are consistent across all barrel sets. The buttpad has light wear. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Coin
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion in the bores. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun set retains about 94% of its metal finish. The balance is mostly in handling wear and discoloration on the bottom of the receiver and the guard. There is light wear on the sides of the 12 gauge barrels from the forend, concealed when assembled. The action shows light operational wear. There are a few other scattered minor marks. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with a strong slot. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun set is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly including ejectors. It has a single selective mechanically operated trigger. The safety does not engage automatically when the action is opened, but functions properly when engaged manually. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes in a Browning luggage case.
Our Assessment: The iconic Model 101 is a shotgun with legendary styling and handling and the unquestionable reliability you expect from Winchester firearms. The Diamond Grade features detailed engraving, white finished hardware, and wood stocks with beautiful grain. This example is a wonderful package, a four-gauge skeet set. With everything you need to switch between 12, 20, 28 and .410 gauge all in serial-matching 27 1/2″ Skeet choked barrels which match up to the stock assembly with the same LOP and drop for each gauge. For the avid skeet shooter, there may not be a finer production skeet set available. This example is in Very Good-plus condition, showing signs of some use, but retaining tight lockups and bright bores. Please see our photos and good luck!
