Our Assessment: This matched pair of Williamsburg Firearms Manufactory “Thomas Jefferson” pistols, produced for the United States Historical Society in 1981, reflects the elegant Queen Anne boxlock flintlock style associated with late 18th century English pistol making. Styled after pistols attributed to the period of Thomas Jefferson, these reproductions evoke the refined, compact form of London-made arms such as those by Dealtry, with brass-framed construction and smooth flowing lines. As commemorative pieces, they combine historical styling with modern production, offering a decorative and functional interpretation of early flintlock sidearms.
Chambered in .41 caliber smoothbore, these pistols follow the traditional format of small, easily handled flintlock arms intended for close-range use. The absence of formal sights is consistent with the Queen Anne pattern, which relied on instinctive pointing rather than precise aiming. The boxlock mechanism, with its internalized lockwork, reflects a streamlined and durable design that was popular in English pistol manufacture of the period, and the brass construction adds both visual appeal and corrosion resistance.
Both pistols present in excellent condition, retaining approximately 97% of their original plated finish with only light handling wear and minor plating loss on the frame of one example. The walnut grips are well preserved, and the bores remain bright with no erosion. The locks are functional, producing spark with clear touch holes, though there is visible verdigris in the pans and light wear to the frizzens from use. The set is accompanied by a display box and period-style accessories, including tools, a ball mold, and original paperwork, enhancing its presentation as a cohesive commemorative ensemble.
