Action Type: Over Under Top Break Shotgun with Single selective mechanical Trigger & Ejectors. The safety does not automatically re-set. The barrel selector is built into the trigger.

Choke: Threaded for Win choke pattern chokes currently installed with Modified over Cylinder.
Sights: The front sight is a large white bead affixed to the front of the rib, there is also a small brass mid bead. The top of the rib has been finely checkered for reducing glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture set on this shotgun is a checkered high gloss walnut set with a round profile full finger shelf forend and a capped semi pistol grip stock with a fluted comb and vented rubber butt pad. The length of pull is 14″, the drop at comb is 1.5 inch and drop at heel is 2 and 3/8ths”. The shotgun weighs 7lbs 8OZ. The stock has a slight right handed cast. The wood shows light handling marks with some crazing in the finish of the stock. The most notable marks on the wood are two crazing lines on the left side of the lower tang. There are no chips or cracks. There is a small compression in the leading edge of the cap. The butt pad is still soft and pliable. Overall the furniture set is in Very Good+-Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The smooth bores are mirror bright and show no erosion or pitting. The top bore shows a few barely visible lines. The bottom barrel is nearly spotless. In this writer’s opinion the bores rate 10/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The barrels show some rub wear from the forend that is concealed when assembled and some barely visible handling. The breech face shows almost no wear. The trigger is missing some finish. The markings are clear. Overall this shotgun is in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrel to receiver fit shows no play or movement. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Weatherby Athena Grade IV Field was manufactured by SKB of Japan for Weatherby and represents one of the finest examples of Japanese over/under shotgun craftsmanship from the era. Chambered in 12 gauge with 3-inch chambers, it features 28-inch barrels threaded for interchangeable WinChoke choke tubes, allowing the shooter to tailor patterns for everything from upland birds to waterfowl and sporting clays. A wide ventilated rib with a front bead and mid bead provides an excellent sighting plane, while the coin-finished receiver, complemented by a gold-toned selective trigger with an integrated barrel selector, gives the shotgun an elegant and understated appearance. Discontinued in 1992, the Athena Grade IV has become increasingly sought after for its combination of dependable SKB engineering and Weatherby’s distinctive styling.
