Our Assessment: The German engraver Gustav Ernst published a series of pattern books between 1839 and 1853. Many of the now well known early American engravers like Nimschke studied Ernst’s patterns while in industrial school in Germany. This style became the foundation of American firearms engraving when his students emigrated to this country. The Walther Ernst PPKS uses a more Germanic Style Ernst pattern on the slide with a centered gold stag on a stainless pistol. The safety also reflects the pattern. This pistol was one of the last Two Hundred Walther PPKS made under contract by the S&W Houlton, Maine Factory. This is number 91 of the 200 that were made.
