Our Assessment: The German Karabiner 98 Kurz, commonly known as the K98, was the standard service rifle of the German military during World War II. It was a bolt-action rifle chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser, a powerful and reliable cartridge. Developed from earlier Mauser rifles, the K98 featured a robust and reliable bolt-action mechanism. It had a five-round internal magazine loaded with stripper clips, allowing for quick reloading in combat situations. The rifle’s action was smooth and well-suited for rapid fire, making it effective in various battlefield conditions. During World War II, the K98 served as the primary infantry weapon for German soldiers on all fronts. It was renowned for its ruggedness, accuracy, and reliability, and it earned a reputation as one of the finest bolt-action rifles of the war. German soldiers appreciated its stopping power and its ability to perform well in adverse conditions. After World War II, surplus K98 rifles were used by various military forces around the world and became popular among civilian shooters and collectors. -R.E.
